TC Galapagos 2014

The third year of the project

Tutela della salute e prevenzione dai rischi di inquinamento antropico (Health protection and prevention of the risks from anthropogenic pollution)

is currently underway.
As described in a previous post one of the objectives of the project is to develop a water quality monitoring programme in order to support joint water management strategies in the Island of Santa Cruz (Galapagos).
From April 10 to 23 we performed the second monitoring campaign in the selected water points, i.e the sites providing water for domestic consumption and recreational purposes (Laguna de las Ninfas).

All the collected samples are now in the lab for chemical, isotopic and microbiological analysis.  Results will be compared with the May 2014 ones, and used to assess the water quality status of the investigated sites.
The next steps of the project will be:

  • The institutionalization of the Water Committee by local authorities.
  • The creation of a database collecting all the water quality data and facilitating information sharing among the Water Committee institutions.
  • The definition of joint strategies and priorities for local water management, based on the outcomes of the monitoring assessment.
